This change takes place until March 27th, 2023, which means there's still time (just) for you to grab all the downloadable games you can fit in your digital arms and run. But with credit card payment support having ended on May 23rd, 2022, and Nintendo eShop cards having ceased to redeem from August 29th, 2022, we want to make sure that you get those games in time, and don't run into any lack-of-fund-related mishaps.

Broadly, it means that you won't be able to buy or download new games on the 3DS or Wii U eShop after 27th March 2023, and you also won't be able to purchase in-game content, download demos or free-to-play software, redeem download codes, or add funds to your account on 3DS or Wii U.

We think this is an effective way to make classic content easily available to a broad range of players. Within these libraries, new and longtime players can not only find games they remember or have heard about, but other fun games they might not have thought to seek out otherwise.

Nintendo's stance is that the Nintendo Switch Online service will replace the Virtual Console, but with no Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, DS, and Wii games available on Nintendo Switch Online, it'll take a long time to catch up.

As someone who still plays on their 3DS and even Wii U this hurts people like us the most, especially if there are games we legitimately want that are EShop Exclusives or can only get on EShop (DLC and Older Games such a N64, Gameboy, Wii, Etc.).I want to make the best out of my Wii U but if they go through with this, I can only get so much until they decided to screw us over.....

I don't get why they don't simply just remove the Classic Games they want to preserve and remove ANY and ALL Retail games from the shop! Where the only things downloadable are EShop Exclusives, Demos, DLC, and Older Classic Games that AREN'T on the Switches list.....

Concerning the virtual console games, will they be playable as normal if they are purchased and downloaded onto the 3DS? For instance, I currently have 4 virtual console titles on my 3DS. After the shop closes, will I be able to access those games as usual, or will they be removed along with the removal of the eShop?

@Semudara Exactly how I felt. I initially assumed I would have the course of an entire year to slowly purchase games I wanted to play. Turns out, I have to front all the money now. That's just not feasible for everyone. It's an extremely deceptive move to announce it as "closing in March 2023."

I've always wondered why Nintendo does this? Does it hurt anything to leave things like the shop or hulu or youtube active on the WiiU? Just say there will be no support/updates/etc for these things & let us keep them. The fact that the WiiU is over a decade old & nintendo is still charging $60 for WiiU titles is mind blowing to me. You would think as we get closer to the date that they would heavily discount games but as we know from previous experience they are going to try & get $60 a game until they close it up. Im modding my WiiU this weekend. If they are going to throw our consoles in the digital trashcan then I don't feel guilty about hacking the WiiU. Sorry, not sorry.

@LittleNinja23 Going by what happened with Wii you will be able to access the games you have already purchased, just not be able to buy new ones, im not sure about transferring licence's to new systems but the games you have on your 3ds should be fine.

The virtual console thing is the most frustrating since as mentioned prior its replacement (NSO) doesn't give you the option to buy the games meaning accessing the games are dependant on the service itself.

I would have absolutely loved to see the virtual console come back alongside some new features (more screen options etc) though unfortunately even when nintendo did make some of their legacy games available to buy digitally on switch (mario 3d all stars, fire emblem) they were delisted sometime later.

All this does is lose them more money which is so sad considering how many bangers the 3DS had. Wii U is the only place to play both those Zelda games in their best forms ?i don't know what i can say, but a guy said the word homebrew so I will repeat that word and hope for the best for those who might be curious. Long live the 3DS! And I hope Ninty brings Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD to Switch...and then the Wii U can also rest peacefully...even more lol

The 3DS has SO MANY great games! Though I admit it's gathered dust, and I barely have time for the great games on Switch. I had to dig around to find my plug for my 3DS. I hope it turns on or I'll be really sad. I have a lot of games for it I'd never get rid of. I even have a Kirby hard shell for it. Granted I still have a GBA SP for the handful of GB games I kept but don't play.

With digital purchases you are still able to play the games you download even after the online store goes down or if a game is delisted where's with NSO there is none of that, when the service ends or if a game is somehow delisted then you cant play it any more, the game and save files are gone.

With other services like on playstation or Xbox there is an option to buy the games on the service if you want to keep them, the same also applies with the DLC on NSO, you can buy DLC like for mario kart etc on its own but with the legacy games like NES, snes n64 etc there is no "buy and keep" option.

i would hope that ideally they would add the option so it wouldnt be needed but that feels like a pipe dream at this point. it does make me appreciate some of the collections weve been getting at least when it comes to things like the castlevania games or the Mana series.

@Mgalens This is exactly why the Wii, Wii U and 3DS virtual console (and the PS3 PSN catalog of PS1, PS2 and in Japan PC Engine) games have been frequent purchases for me in the last year - but I have yet to purchase an NSO subscription.

Almost all of my 3DS and Wii purchases were eShop games (as well as many Wii shop titles). I think bought more games for my Wii U than I did for my SNES back in the 90s and the same for my 3DS versus my original Game Boy.

@Z-Core the official support page does say it will be possible to download software updates. I've heard some talks of select games with fancy updates that need to be processed as separate eShop items (which would make their functionality uncertain after today indeed), but I can't even recall what titles were claimed to deal with that.

As for 3DS, it's a search for 'update' and install each one you're interested in for now or future game purchases. I was surprised to see a Shovel Knight Treasure Trove update that I hadn't installed but anyone buying this digitally in the current sale will get the latest version.

Well, it took over a week and about a couple thousand dollars, but I was able to buy almost all of the games and DLC that I have been meaning to get over the years, but never did. A few I figured I'd not bother with, because they're either available on other platforms, or I didn't want them as badly.

I just hope that Nintendo will rerelease these games for the Switch or a future system of theirs. It would be a shame to see these games disappear into the virtual ether. They really need to be at the forefront of game preservation, especially digital games.

It should not have to be up to the gaming community to preserve these titles, especially since Nintendo considers anyone other than them doing it to be piracy. It's only a matter of time before someone uploads these games, DLC, and apps to the Internet, though.

The Virtual Console. One of Nintendos greatest ideas ends today sadly. So many memories with the Virtual Console service from Wii to the 3DS to the Wii U. It's was on the Wii that I introduced my son to the games I played as a kid and that wouldn't have been possible without the Virtual Console. Heck the Virtual Console is what made me want a Wii in the first place when Nintendo first announced it. It will be sad that, after today that name will be dead. So long Virtual Console and thanks for the memories.

@Tasuki Yeah, that was one of the big draws for me with the Wii. Heck, I remember having dreams about unboxing the Wii (back when it was still known as the Revolution) and playing the Virtual Console games. So it's definitely a sad day.

EDIT: I just downloaded a game from the Wii U eShop at work with no issues, unlike at home.Had I known how fast and reliable the internet at work is for small downloads (which is essentially what I'm getting now with Virtual Console games) I would've brought my Wii U to work since the closure was announced. Oh, well, can't win 'em all.

I'm finishing up my final 3DS purchases today. I really liked my WiiU, but I basically own everything I'd want physically, and even though I still have it hooked up to my TV, I don't play it that often. Now my 3DS on the other hand I'm going to miss the eshop something fierce. It's my 3rd favorite Nintendo system. I'm nostalgic for the NES and SNES, as those are the systems of my childhood, but the 3DS I played for a longer time, and I took EVERYWHERE. Just about every trip I'd take it with me to get street passes. It's the perfect system to play before bed, or take to the bathroom. lol. I put so many hours into it, it's probably the played system I've played. I like the Switch, but to me, it's not a good portable system. I can't put it in my pocket and go. In my opinion, the 3DS is the best portable system ever. I hope a lot of the digital only games find life somewhere else in the future. I can't image the outcry in about 10 years when Nintendo closes the Switch eshop. 041b061a72
